Sphaeralcea coccinea (Nutt. ) Rydb. Also Called: Red mallow, scarlet false mallow, red false mallow, cowboy's delight. Flowering Period: June, July, August, September Family: Mallow ( Malvaceae ) Height: up to 12" Life Span: Perennial Stems: Silvery, hairy, and leafy stems. Leaves: Leaves are deeply dissected into 3-lobed, rough, silvery segments. Flowers: Orange-red or brick-red flowers bloom in narrow clusters. Each flower is 3/4" across with 5 petals. Habitat: Commonly found in dry areas of fields, roadsides, and shrubby slopes. Distribution: Distribution Map Reproduction: By seeds. To grow this flower, sow treated seed or take rhizome cuttings in spring. Spring tip cuttings under mist or in a heated frame are another propagation option. Forage Value: Deer and pronghorn graze this plant, and birds and small mammals eat the fruits. Uses: Crushed leaves can used to treat skin irritation, inflamed sores and wounds, blistered feet. Indians used it for treating sore eyes. |
