Also Called:  Frosty ball, alpine thistle, wolly thistle.

Flowering Period:  July, August, September

Family:  Aster / Sunflower ( Asteraceae / Compositae )

Height:  up to 2'

Life Span:  Perennial

Stems:  White hairy stems with long spines.

Leaves:  Lance-shaped and up to 6" long, teeth are tipped by 1/2" long spines.

Flowers:  Usually they have nodding heads and the heads are denser and hairier. Flowers can be creamy white to yellow. The disk flowers can be yellow or purple.

Habitat:  Rocky, gravelly and sunny slopes in alpine and subalpine.
