Also Called: Venus's slipper, calypso orchid.
Flowering Period: May, June, July
Family: Orchid ( Orchidaceae )
Height: 3-8" (7.5-20cm)
Life Span: Perennial
Stems: 2-8" stem has a tube-like sheath around it.
Leaves: About 3" (7.5cm) long oval leaf with wavy edges. Leaf will wither after the flower is finished blooming and be replaced be an overwintering leaf.
Flowers: 1 1/2 - 2" (4-5cm) long. It has a white lip petal, blotched with purple, bearded with yellow hairs, with 2 horn-like points at "toe". 3 sepals and 2 similar upper petals purplish pink, narrow, above lip.
The central petal is whitish pink with yellow and reddish purple markings.
Habitat: Prefers cool, moist, shady, mossy, and mainly coniferous woods.
Comments: Some botanists place it in the Ladyslipper family (Cypripediaceae)
